Calcium chloride (chemical formula: Ca(ClO₂)₂) is the calcium salt of hydrochloric acid. It is a chemical compound usually found as a white or yellowish powder.
It has strong oxidizing and disinfecting properties. It can decompose upon contact with water, releasing active components such as chlorine dioxide (ClO₂).

Used as a germicide (biocide) in drinking water, wastewater, and industrial water treatment plants. Also used as a precursor in chlorine dioxide production.
Used as an ammonia source in chloramine disinfection in wastewater treatment plants.
As a surface disinfectant (in controlled and approved situations). Sterilization of some food processing equipment.
